Choosing a Minivan

By Mary Margaret Keaton
Choosing a minivan for families with GoBabies® is a
daunting task, given the many options available from
one model to the next. And while style, price, and
latest technology features are important factors in
making a decision, safety comes first.
GoBabies® need minivans with seats that allow
excellent car seat installation. According to Erin
Riches, editor of Edmunds.com, a consumer ratings
and review website for automobiles, parents should
look for:
-
Deep flat bottomed cushions
that provide a more
level surface for car seats than contoured cushions
found in sedans and coupes.
-
Seatbelt anchor points that allow a car seat to
fit snugly onto the seat.
-
Locking retractor seatbelts
(ALR/ELR) in the back seat to ensure a tighter,
safer fit for car seats.
-
Reclining seats
to allow parents to
adjust for kids' comfort in car seats.
-
Easy access, such as wide door openings and
sliding seats, to help parents install car seats
without straining their backs.
Riches
reports that minivan models with the easiest car
seat installation include the Toyota Siena, Honda
Odyssey, and Ford Freestyle. Of these, Edmunds.com
only recommends the Siena and Odyssey overall.
The
Car Seat Compatibility Database (carseat.org) is a
terrific resource for families with GoBabies®. The
web site provides information for every car model
and every car seat brand and how they fit together.
Just plug in the information and the search engine
will provide a report about the best car seats for
your particular minivan.
