Top 10 Traveling Tips With Babies Under One

By Pamela Lanier

Traveling with a baby can be a great undertaking. To make things easier for you, use these travel tips.

1. The younger the baby, the easier it is to travel with him. If your trips can be scheduled in advance, consider travelling when your baby is between 3-6 months. This will be the easiest on you. These babies aren't mobile yet and still take 2 naps a day.

2. When flying, travel during the day. This encompasses nap time (if your baby doesn't nap on the way to the airport!). Night flights are only for babies who sleep like a log. Don't assume that because you're flying at night, your baby will sleep. The change in environment might keep her awake.

3. When flying, feed your baby or give him a pacifier on ascent and descent to help prevent problems with ear pressure.

4. In case luggage gets lost, keep a wet washcloth (in a plastic bag), two changes of clothes, and diapers in your carry-on.

5. Look into flying with United Airlines. They are especially sensitive to parents flying with infants. Inquire about their bulkhead cribs.

6. Pack a new toy or two for the trip.

7. If it's a short trip, make it easy and bring the minimum of gear. A carrier instead of a stroller, a portable clip-on high chair or cloth chair sling. Check to see if your destination has cribs, or other baby gear. Most hotels do.

8. Enlist your babysitter to come along if you must travel alone with your baby. Especially if much will be expected of you at your destination. The extra airfare will be well worth it.

9. When traveling by car leave very early in the morning or early evening and maybe your baby will sleep part way. If you have a long drive ahead of you, plan on stopping for a long lunch break so that everyone can stretch. You'll need it and so will your baby.

10. Plan some free time for yourself--even if it's just a cup of coffee, a 15 minute nap or a dip in the hotel pool.
